WATCH: American 737 Bursts Tire on Takeoff and Rejects With Their Landing Gear on Fire
A user on reddit has shared an amazing video of an American Airlines Boeing 737-800 bursting a tire on the takeoff roll and rejecting that takeoff while the tire shreds and bursts into flames.
The flight looks to be AA590 from Tampa to Phoenix.
This is one of the better videos that I've seen of a tire completely shredding from an airliner during takeoff roll. I applaud the cameraman for keeping with the aircraft and getting some great views of the carnage when that wheel shreds on the runway.
The video above seems to show the aircraft about to take off, nearing V1 speed (or the point of no return). With the exception of aircraft fire or damage, after V1 it's safer to takeoff than it is to try to stop on the runway.
It's incredible to see the tire burst and shred, throwing chunks of rubber behind them as the pilots stomp on the brakes to slow the aircraft down before it reaches the end of the runway. It looks as if they managed to use every single bit of the runway, coming to a stop at the very end where fire crews met them.
When the aircraft turns off the runway, you can see the side with the blown tire is glowing red and on fire. It seems to take just a few moments for fire crews to get to the aircraft and start to spray water from all sides on the burning wheel.
Fun Fact: Aircraft tires are designed to never explode like car tires can. They have fuse plugs in them that melt at high temperature to let the air out. Rather than become inflated and burst.
While we don't see the conclusion of this event, it's likely that they brought stairs out to the airplane and bussed everyone back to the terminal. A quick Google search shows that AA590 was cancelled, and likely all the passengers were either offered refunds or rebooked on the other flights to Phoenix later in the day.
