VIDEO: Student Who Damaged 10+ Planes at Flight School - Police Bodycam Footage
The bodycam footage from the student who damaged more than 10 planes at a flight school because he didn't get his solo sign-off has been released. He has since been sentenced to 226 days in jail for criminal mischief.
Reports were that he flew into a rage after being denied his first solo and damaged multiple planes so that nobody at the flight school would be able to fly them.
Solo is where a flight instructor clears a student to start flying by themselves to gain hours and experience before their final exam.
The student, who is in the country on a foreign visa, did not seem all that enraged by the time the police arrived, and really the video does not show much drama. The police officers started by handcuffing the individual, but ended up releasing him and bringing him around to survey the damage.
Multiple small aircraft were broken by ripping up the airplanes and breaking equipment in them. All the while you see them lugging along the student as they were shown all the broken equipment.
Later in the video, they brought the student into an interrogation room where he didn't really sound regretful for his actions, only spiteful towards the school for not letting him fly solo.
Paying for flight school and meeting certain criteria to continue your training can be very stressful. Flight training often costs a lot of money, and any extra money that you have to pay can double down on the stress. Along with that, the knowledge you have to learn and apply is incredible for a short amount of time you usually have between the classroom and your exams.
Final Thoughts
The blank expression on the student's face and the way he did not sound like he regretted his actions was the most angering. There are flight school students who had to put their training on hold while the 10+ airplanes had to be fixed, causing further delays. While he has since served his jail time, I hope that he would be banned from flying and no flight school would take the risk to have him as a student.
